I am very curious about Sysco Food Service, if anyone here knows much about the company, or even just the industry. Sysco is hiring a sales rep in my area. I wanted to learn more about the position and the company.

Good things, bad things, word of caution, etc. are all appreciated.

I just met someone who works there. I don't know much about what he thinks of the job but he seems to be doing OK. Been there a while. I am sure more people will discover this board and be able to give more specific info.

I have not worked for Sysco but have been in the food service industry for two years. One job I was a competitor against Sysco and the other I was a direct rep for General Mills Food Service. Sysco, in general not bad. I have friends that work there and enjoy the pay. It all depends on the warehouse and location you have. How far are you having to drive out in the territory, how much market share do they have in that territory. Around in the south, US Foods dominate and Sysco rules more in the midwest, esp. Texas. The pay is decent, the hours can be hard, unless you are used to waking up at 3 or 4 am in some cases. The differences known between Sysco and it's competitors are that Sysco prices its private label products much higher and are usually higher in general on their overall prices. So be prepared to hear customers complain about high prices. On the other hand, they are known for high quality and service and most of their customers are very loyal. Hope this helps. Good Luck!!!

Do you know of any recruiters in the Southeast? Any that specialize in food/beverage? Thank you.

I buy from Sysco, And they seem to have a pretty good structure to their sales force with lots of "help" higher up... may be the reason they are a little more expensive than US Foods?

The poster in #4 asked about foodservice recruiters. There are lots thru out the country. Google just that...recruiters food and beverage. If you are interested in the sales end, just walk in to the nearest distributor and ask for HR. Get the hiring District Manager's name and number and where you can apply for a position. Since many of the sales positions are commission, management always wants to talk with go-getters and those with experience.
