I worked for an agency and they really took the commissions out for the reps......looking to push the agencies out out the door for the new model which mirrors IKONS, ect. Its Global Imaging solutions

Canon is probably the biggest & best these days, but either is good to stay 2 yrs and use as strpping stone to get into Pharm or even better, Medical Device sales.

Trust me, pharma is not fun nor is it that lucrative. I did Konica Minolta for 1yr+, then 3yrs of pharma, now Im in medical device with Stryker. The interviewers did not like my pharma experience. They would rather copiers for 2-3yrs.

I have heard this before, but it is hard to believe that interviewers would ignore consistent success in pharma sales. They can say what they want to, but only the best reps consistently turn in good performances.

He is right to a point. What would have been golden to have would be to switch that around. 3+ years with Konica, 1 year with pharma. As simple as it is these people have a bit of an ego to them and don't think you could ever learn the material. Pharma shows them a couple of things....you can learn the material, you can work out of your house and be productive, you are familiar with doctor/rep relationship....little different than buyer. Anything more than a year or two in pharma though is a death wish for further sales careers. Get in, get out no more than a year and half.

Used to work for IKON. Decent money. Base around 30-40k, no expenses paid, made around 30-50k per year in commisions. Monies paid are completely based on gross profit included in any deal. You must be able to sell in competitive market and hold profit or you will make hardly anything. Can only talk for IKON but they had some excellent products when I left especially on the workflow side, still have friends there and don't know yet how the Ricoh buyout will affect them. I would stay away from small/local businesses but I am sure each location is different.

I've worked for Ricoh for two years and was my first job out of school. The job sucks day in/day out, but the money can be extremely good, especially considering how quickly you can make it. My second year and I'm on track for 105K total comp. I'm looking now to make the jump to medical device sales and am expecting an offer in the next month, and have had great feedback from all interviewers with the successful copier sales background. They absolutely love it. Its pretty much the if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere kind of industry. The experience is great.

Just because you do well in pharma doesn't mean anything, if your products are on formulary in the area you work in you will make good numbers as opposed to device sales, where it actually IS selling. I was in pharma for 3 years and was in copiers prior to that. When I got into device sales this year, all my copier training came back into my head and i realized that pharma made me "stupider." Pharma isn't sales...not a bad job, but it isn't a commision focused sales job like selling a 50k dollar copier is, or a 50k dollar medical widget.

When I sold copiers 5ish years ago, xerox was about the same size as canon, so both big players, really though most of the systems are the same, and all really damn good machines, it comes down to selling service and value.

Absolutely, they both are players but I still give it to Xerox as the most recognized name. Two reasons:
1. They are still the brand name and have a few technologies which makes them the premium sell.
2. They use the Xerox model of selling and fly you in the US to do the training which is known in the industry.......agency or not go with Xerox if you can.

I am looking into Xerox. What is their base like? How micro managed are the reps?

Does anyone know what Xerox agency pays is like?

I actually would try to stay away from Xerox, if I were you.
I am employed with a competitor of theirs, but it seems like it would suck to only be able to sell just the Xerox brand.
How customizable is that portfolio? At least with some different companies out there, you have different brands to sell and you also get the chance to sell software and full EDM solutions.

I know they supposedly have great training but basically if you read the book, "SPIN Selling", you'll know everything they're taught. They base their training on that book specifically.

Especially in my territory, their service is just plain horrible. I have had customers that have switched to other companies based purely on the fact that their service is awful and their sales person never followed up with them after the sale.

I have heard something similar from a former bus equip rep who sold against them years ago. He would sometimes lose sales to Xerox, only to have the office come to him a few years later looking to change due poor service and higher than expected maintenance costs.

Xerox is a great company. Comp is great, training is great, products and technology are great. Management is great as well. They could give it up a little more for comp, but one can make well over 100k/yr. NO ONE can beat their technology. But if you can sell Xerox, you can sell anything since it's always the most expensive. You learn how to make it happen.

All copier companies have bad service and good service. Each has their pluses and minuses as far as products. There are a few competitive advantages for each company.

The key is to stick it out and learn your territory and you will win competitive business just by accident of building a relationship with DM's because the reps from the other companies will have turned over.

Just get in a territory that has as many present accounts as possible and gain their trust so you can flip them profitably. As far as new accounts, just work the top 250 in your territory and forget about the muck, you cant make money on them anyhow.

If you can deal with it how much it sucks for 2-3 years and actually work, you can easily do 100-150k, but it's not a sprint. As long as you're not a douche, you can be successful doing it.
