View Full Version : Stepping stone

I loved working at Paychex. But after hitting conference for two years and making peanuts, I jumped into medical device sales and I'm now making almost triple what I did as a conference rep at Paychex.

Paychex is a good comapany to work for to get experience in sales, it's a good stepping stone, but you're either a damn fool or an average sales rep if you make a career out of working at Paychex.

How were you able to get into device sales without device experience?

Not all medical jobs require past medical experience. Most posting will ask for mandatory medical expereince, but often time they want a college degree and a few years of proven b2b success.

Medical recruiters love to pull from Paychex, ADP, Cintas, Xerox etc. becuase they know top reps don't make any money compared to what they can make at a medical company. I was a conference rep at Paychex and my best year I made 87k, that's ridiculous. My last two yers in medical sales I've easily cleard 250k.

Im in pharma now but my company is dropping ALL samples starting in 2009...how is it at Paychex ? A recruiter told me today I would start at 70 K for 6 months while training ....move to 55 K while in the feild ...then be at 48 K plus commission . This looks promising .. Is the recruiter full of BS or is this how it is ?

Thanks

I am trying to break into device. Did you use a recruiter, did they find you, or did you know somebody. I too am a top rep and I barely cleared $100k.

medreps.com you will have to pay an annual fee, but do it and send your resume to every recruiter possible even if you don't qualify for the job.

I know the paychex rep down here in FL, started at 30k base. So it may depend on your region.

Ugh, I absolutely despised working at Paychex. I also worked with a neurotic freak of a manager, and in the city I am in, they expected you to live, eat, and breathe Paychex bull****. Not only was my district immoral and incestuous (reps sleeping w/reps and managers, people blowing coke constantly, lying to clients and reps, eating disorders, basically an extension of a horrible sorority/fraternity college nightmare). My crazy ass manager would get onto me if I did not go out for happy hour or to get wasted with my team.... she would give me a huge guilt trip... Absolutely no work/life balance and yes, I made conference and barely cleared 68k. My experience with this company was extremely valuable on paper, and I am now enjoying a great career in med sales. So, the 2 years of hell got me to where I am, but I would not tell my worst enemy to work here. I would tell them to work at ADP any day of the week before working for this joke of a company!

paychex gives you a great foundation on how to sell....i believe that you cant really make great money as i have yet to make over 100k and i am a conference winner....take this job and put at least 2 yrs in and then get into something bigger and better in the medical industry

Hi
If you have 18mths. plus of successful b2b sales, please feel free to reach out to us.
If you are new to sales, stick it out the 12 months (Most co's will prefer 18-24+) and make sure to keep all of your awards, accomplishments, certificates etc...
We are in the NY metro area, but we work Nationwide. Please shoot me a resume if you want to start the medical/pharma sales job search.

Hello! Quick question..is medical sales similar or different from paychex sales? If so how? I don't know much about it. I am at Paychex now, I was an ASR for two years and made conference both times and just was promoted to a territory 3 months ago.

Do Paychex reps work out of their homes like pharma reps, or do they regularly go to a central office?

Whoever it was that was making $68k and made conference that is insane -- first of all I have no idea how you were able to sell that little and still made conference. Is that even possible? I know some zones have a lower conference number but where were you?

It's unfortunate that you're branch was such a mess -- that is not how my office was at all. One of the best things that I had coming out of Paychex are the friends I've made. We weren't forced to go to happy hours - we chose to lean on one another for support and are all still close years later. Unfortunately, medical sales is a little more solitary -- I actually miss my friends and life having an office and co-workers to bounce ideas off of.

one more thing... I would NEVER recommend anyone to work at ADP for small business. Paychex hands down has a better product. I have worked with ADP reps since then and they have admitted the same thing. It's a much better product for small businesses. I was always upfront and honest with my clients and would not sell something if I didn't think it was a good fit.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience -- it's not like that everywhere.

ex adp rep here. made the move to device and I will tell you the grass is not always greener. the guys that are making 250k are few and far between. You will be doing good to make 120k which is still not bad pay at all esp if you live in a mid market like myself. I just didn't care for all the headaches that came with it. was basically forced out b/c of a personality conflict with my boss. doing oil and gas sales and it is the best job in my career. still making more than I made at adp not as much as device but I wear blue jeans and a bottom up and love life.
